About

Jeff NAAHello! I’m Jeff Hartley and welcome to my blog, digitalfirstnewspapers.com.  Like many of you, I grew up in this business on the print side and now I’m making the transition to focusing on maximizing our opportunities across all platforms (in print, digital, social media and mobile). It’s a fascinating time to be in the newspaper business and keeping up with how they are transitioning is critical. Putting together this weekly digital update helps me stay up to date on everything that is developing at newspapers across the country and I hope it will help you too. If you would like to get weekly updates delivered to your email inbox, please sign up on the main page. Thank you.

Wow! What a great source of info, thanks Jeff. I am GM of a bi-weekly community paper, part of Digital First Media. Seems like I spend a bunch of time apologizing that our advertising revenue in print is up! Not coming from the media world (but from what we called the “computer world” since the late 70s)… it was easy to see how publishers weren’t MARKETING their products well. With 6 months of tweaks in the newsroom and ad sales we increases OP by 128% YTD over prev year. PS Our digital/print revenue ratio is about 20/80. Both print and digital revenue is growing. Lucky me eh? A favor looking at advertiser perceived value than hard justified circulation, views, clicks etc – our advertisers want community involvement, personal attention, and buy advertising accordingly. pls view our sweet little paper ruidosonews.com?

    Jeff,

Thanks for the invite to your blog. I am on board.

My career began in circulation and I still find building readership extremely exciting. I am thrilled to see a circulation person take this step.

At our newspaper http://www.eagletribune.com the circulation department has been the readership department for several years now. All Google Analytics are measured in our circ department. They are charged to grow print, desktop, mobile and text alert traffic.

These are exciting times. Keep up the good work.

I invite your readers to join me at http://www.algetler.com where I discuss leadship, management, customer service and branding.
    Cheers,
    Al

Saw you link about Gamification. Savannah Morning News has actually teamed up with Big Door, which was mentioned in the article, and have been working with them for about 6 months now.

We’ve also talked Bunchball and they are very interested in doing a deal with Morris too. If you’re interested let me know and I’ll get you up to speed.

  5. Thanks for this cool, time saving info service, Jeff! I look forward to my daily deliveries 🙂
